Movie Monday!

4 Oct

Today was absolutely great day for lots of things: my job search, my networking skills, and even homework! Today’s post is about the movie I watched: Pray the Devil Back to Hell. But first, a recap of the day!

This morning I went to the career class offered by my graduate school. It was probably the most beneficial class I’ve been to thus far for the class, and I will post a recap of what we learned from it either tomorrow or Wednesday. It was about networking and how to present your “elevator speech” when you network. A lot of things we learned about in class today, I already knew. My Mom is quite possibly the best person EVER at networking, and I have learned so much from her over my entire lifetime.

Things that come naturally to me because of what my Mom taught me obviously do not come so easily to other people, as I learned in class today. For example, we talked about how to act when attending conferences or other events where you have to network. One student raised her hand and asked “After I introduce myself, the conversation just seems to die.” What seemed to be an easy answer to me (smile, keep talking, ask questions about the other person’s background, etc.) were actually like foreign concepts to many people in the class.

Another thing that a lot of people didn’t seem to know was how important it is to stay in touch with previous contacts, even if you don’t think you will “need” them anymore. As my Mom always said while I was growing up, you never “burn bridges” and you always keep in touch, no matter how long it’s been since you’ve seen them, how far away they are, or however much you think you don’t “need” them.

Of course, I also learned a lot of valuable info from today’s career class, especially about the “six degrees of separation” in networking. I won’t elaborate too much in this post, but I do realize I have to use LinkedIn a LOT more than I do right now!

Anyway, about the movie… Students for Africa, a student organization on campus, was screening the documentary Pray the Devil Back to Hell today. They advertised it last week, and the movie has received positive reviews from a few people I follow on Twitter, so I decided it would be a worthy film to see.

The movie follows Liberian women in 2000-2003 during a period of intense fighting between Charles Taylor (the leader/dictator of Liberia) and warlords in the country side. The country has been embroiled in war since 1989, but it continues to get worse when, in the 2000s, the women decide to stage a peaceful protest, demanding an end to “suffering, war, and rape.”

The women in Liberia are from different religions, but they all are willing to do literally anything to bring peace to their country. They eventually force the warlords and Charles Taylor’s regime to get together in Ghana for peace talks, which does come to some fruition.

The thing I liked most about this movie was how determined the women were in bringing peace to their country. These women faced overwhelming obstacles and danger to commit to a peace protest like this, and many of the women had already been brutalized in so many different ways. Yet they demanded, and brought about, a significant change in Liberia. In fact, the women did not just abandon the cause after the peace talks either. They rallied and voted women into office in the new democracy. In fact, Liberia elected the first female president, Madame Sirleaf, in 2005!

It was an extremely worthwhile documentary. It does not lean towards the “heavy” side too much, and by heavy I mean overwhelmingly depressing. Of course, you can’t escape the violence and abuse and death in this documentary, but this documentary is more about hope and what hope plus determination can achieve for women.

I think everyone who is interested in international affairs or women’s rights should see this! It is an excellent documentary that has something for everyone.

Career course

19 Sep

Happy Monday, everyone! Like I said before, life is crazy busy… and it’s about to get crazier! On Friday, I decided to take a career course offered by our Career and Professional Development center. I’m really excited about this class because I think it should give me a clearer picture of what I want to do and how I can go about getting there. Also, I’m hoping it provides some connections and resources for job opportunities. We’ll see!

Speaking of connections, my Mom is friends with a woman who has a contact in Homeland Security. I was able to send him an email with my resume and a cover letter. He emailed me back recently, just mentioning how much resume was “very impressive” and that he was willing to work with me. Unfortunately, the government is in a “hiring freeze” for his particular department, so we’ll see. I’m glad I’m still a couple months out from graduating… cross your fingers they lift that freeze! It would be a dream to work in the Homeland Security department… that is exactly what I am going to school for, and is fast paced. I love how interesting and diverse issues are on a day to day basis. It’s perfect for keeping me engaged and dynamic in the field!

As for classes, this quarter is going to be a ton of work. I like about 2/4 classes I’m taking, which isn’t a great ratio, but we’ll see. I’m half and half about liking the two other classes… I might eventually like them, but I’ve only had one class of each so far, so maybe they will get more interesting. Most of them are required core classes, so I didn’t exactly get to choose the most interesting courses!

The other day I had an absolutely delicious breakfast– in fact, I’m reminded of how I need to go to the grocery store ASAP for some more yogurt!

Blueberry soy yogurt topped with strawberries, blueberries, and bananas. Bananas are full of potassium, which is great because I’ve been cramping up from all the gym stuff I’ve been doing. It’s good, but tiring!

All right, off to do some more homework. Hasta luego!

I’m counting down the days until I go back to school and my “school life” back in Denver… only 2 more days left here in Phoenix! It might sound like I’m excited, and I am, a little, but I’m also pretty sad I have to head back so soon. I had a great summer, and I did a lot of stuff (some good, some bad).

Here’s a rundown: Continue reading

VegNews chat & Horchata!

24 Aug

Tonight I participated in the VegNews chat (hashtag: #vegnewschat) on Twitter, and it was AMAZING! It was designed to ask serious (i.e. professional) bloggers how they got started, what blogs they read, what they would recommend for new bloggers, etc. It also allowed us new bloggers to ask questions to the pros and get their feedback on certain things. I have to say, I really benefited from the info on what camera to use (apparently my iPhone isn’t cutting it… sorry guys!), what type of blogger feeds everyone uses to catch up on all the blogs they follow, and advice for ad revenue. Not that I’m looking to put any ads on this blog, but maybe eventually it would be cool too.

Someone also mentioned how the future of blogging, especially food blogs, might turn into something like HuffPo. Continue reading

This post will be short today, as I’ve got a lot going on, but to update on yesterday…

Yesterday was so much fun! It was my second day of the week to relax and hang out with my grandma and cousin. The day before, we had an exhausting day of shopping. Although shopping is always fun, when it’s so hot like it is here, it can definitely drain you quickly! Luckily, yesterday the three of us went to the pool for two hours and got some serious floating and tanning in. Don’t worry, this time I loaded up on sunscreen so I didn’t even get burned. Hooray! Back! Re-cap of the last week.

17 Aug

Whew! So I know I said I would be able to post more last week… well, schoolwork and packing up my place sort of overwhelmed me, and as you can see, the blog suffered for it. But I’m back now, and I’m on vacation, so I am completely relaxed and psyched to get back into the blog!

My last week in Denver was incredibly busy, packing and finishing up my papers, but I did manage to have some fun AND work on getting myself out there for future jobs. Continue reading
